At least one person has died and several others are feared trapped after a six-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday afternoon, triggering a major rescue operation.
The building, reportedly being used as a paying guest accommodation for students, collapsed in southwest Delhi. Emergency teams rushed to the site after receiving information about the incident. Several people are believed to have been inside the structure when it came down.
Rescue Operation Underway
Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Services, disaster response teams and other emergency personnel have been deployed at the site. Heavy machinery is being used to remove concrete slabs and debris as rescuers search for people who may still be trapped.
Officials have confirmed that multiple people have been rescued from the rubble. Three rescued individuals were reportedly taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre and were in critical condition.
South-West Delhi BJP MLA Anil Sharma said that some students trapped beneath the debris were able to make phone calls, raising hopes that more survivors could be located. However, authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of people trapped.
Building Was Used As Student PG
According to reports, the collapsed structure housed a boys’ PG accommodation and may have had dozens of occupants. A preliminary assessment cited by officials suggested that around 40 to 50 people could have been inside the building when it collapsed, although the figure remains subject to confirmation.
The incident has prompted authorities to secure the surrounding area. The adjacent building has reportedly been evacuated as a precautionary measure while rescue operations continue. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said multiple agencies were working together on a “war footing” to rescue those trapped and provide assistance to affected families.
Cause Of Collapse Yet To Be Confirmed
The exact cause of the building collapse is not yet known. Authorities are expected to investigate the structural condition of the building and examine whether any construction or safety violations contributed to the incident.
Rescue operations remain underway, with teams continuing to search through the rubble for survivors. The casualty figure could change as the operation progresses.
