The intense sporting rivalry between India and Pakistan once again captured the attention of fans across Asia, with their cricket and hockey clashes at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya emerging as the most-watched matches in the history of the continental sporting event.
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) confirmed that the men’s cricket final and men’s hockey semifinal between the two neighbouring nations attracted the biggest audiences ever recorded for Asian Games matches. However, the OCA did not disclose exact viewership figures or specify which of the two encounters attracted the larger audience.
India-Pakistan Hockey Thriller
The hockey semifinal produced a dramatic contest at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Kakamigahara. India defeated Pakistan 4-3 in a closely fought encounter to book its place in the final.
India appeared to be in control after taking a 3-0 lead, but Pakistan fought back strongly to level the score at 3-3. India eventually found the winning goal late in the match to secure a place in the gold-medal match.
India went on to defeat Malaysia in the final and successfully claim the men’s hockey gold medal.
Cricket Final Adds to the Viewership Surge
The excitement continued the following day when India and Pakistan met in the men’s cricket final.
India posted 211/6, with Abhishek Sharma scoring 61 and Tilak Varma contributing an unbeaten 51. Pakistan responded with 192/6, despite a brilliant 96 from Hasan Nawaz, as India secured a 19-run victory and defended its Asian Games cricket title.
The high stakes, historic rivalry and gold medal at stake helped make the cricket final another major television attraction.
OCA Highlights Record Audience
OCA Coordination Committee President Tayyab Ikram said the Games’ broadcast achieved its biggest-ever audience largely because of the two India-Pakistan encounters. He described the cricket match as the most-watched match of the Games, while the hockey semifinal a day earlier had also set a new Asian Games viewership record.
The announcement highlights the enormous commercial and sporting appeal of India-Pakistan contests, particularly when the two sides meet in major multi-sport events.
The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games also witnessed a remarkable number of sporting records, with the OCA reporting 212 Asian Games records broken during the competition.
With India winning both the hockey and cricket gold medals after defeating Pakistan in their respective knockout encounters, the rivalry once again became one of the defining stories of the 2026 Asian Games.
