The co-pilot accused of attacking the captain and attempting to seize control of a Flydubai passenger aircraft appears to have acted alone, according to preliminary findings from Israeli and U.S. officials. Investigators have not so far found evidence that he was operating as part of a larger organisation or under the direction of a foreign government.
The incident took place on Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30. The aircraft was carrying more than 170 people when the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain inside the cockpit and attempted to take control of the aircraft. The UAE has described the incident as a terrorist attack.
Despite suffering serious injuries, the captain managed to open the cockpit door. Passengers and crew members then intervened and overpowered the attacker. A reserve pilot who was travelling on the aircraft helped take control, and the plane was diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.
The accused co-pilot, identified by multiple reports as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, was detained in Saudi Arabia before being transferred to the United Arab Emirates for questioning. Authorities are continuing to investigate his background, motives and possible connections.
While early assessments indicate that the suspect likely acted as a “lone wolf,” officials have stressed that the investigation remains ongoing. Investigators are examining whether he had any links to extremist organisations or whether anyone else was involved in planning or encouraging the alleged attack.
Australian authorities are also investigating the co-pilot’s links to the country after reports that he had studied in Melbourne. The wider investigation has raised questions about aviation security, background checks and how the co-pilot was assigned to a flight bound for Israel.
Authorities have yet to establish a definitive motive for the incident. The investigation involving UAE, Israeli, Saudi and other agencies is expected to examine the suspect’s previous activities, travel history and possible ideological influences before drawing final conclusions.
