Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down as head coach of Mumbai Indians (MI), bringing an end to his decade-long association with the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions. The franchise announced his departure on Saturday, October 17, 2026, ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
Jayawardene leaves behind a significant legacy at Mumbai Indians, having guided the franchise to three IPL titles during his first stint as head coach. The team won championships in 2017, 2019 and 2020 under his leadership, establishing itself as one of the most successful sides in the tournament.
A Decade-Long Association With Mumbai Indians
Jayawardene first took charge of Mumbai Indians in 2017 and remained head coach until 2022. During this period, he helped build a successful team culture based on discipline, teamwork and tactical planning.
In 2022, he moved into the role of Global Head of Performance for the wider Mumbai Indians franchise network. He was responsible for supporting the team’s cricketing philosophy across its various teams competing in international T20 leagues.
Jayawardene returned as Mumbai Indians head coach ahead of the 2025 IPL season, replacing Mark Boucher after the franchise finished at the bottom of the standings in 2024.
However, his second stint did not produce the same level of success as his first. Mumbai Indians finished fourth in the 2025 league stage and subsequently lost in Qualifier 2. In the 2026 season, the team endured another disappointing campaign, finishing ninth in the standings.
Jayawardene Thanks the Mumbai Indians Family
Following the announcement, Jayawardene expressed gratitude to the franchise, its management, players, coaching staff and supporters for their continued backing throughout his tenure.
He acknowledged the importance of his association with Mumbai Indians and said he would always value the memories and achievements shared with the team. He also thanked franchise owners Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their trust, support and friendship.
Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani praised Jayawardene’s leadership, integrity and commitment, acknowledging his contribution to the franchise over the years. She also wished him success in his future endeavours.
Mumbai Indians Prepare for a New Chapter
Jayawardene’s departure creates an important opening in Mumbai Indians’ coaching setup as the franchise begins preparations for IPL 2027. The management will now need to identify a successor capable of restoring consistency and helping the team challenge for another championship.
The timing is significant, with the IPL retention deadline approaching on November 15 and the next player auction expected in December. Mumbai Indians will have important decisions to make regarding squad composition, team strategy and the direction of their coaching staff.
Although Jayawardene’s second stint ended without another IPL title, his achievements during his first tenure have secured his place in the franchise’s history. His departure marks the end of an important chapter for Mumbai Indians as they look to rebuild and return to winning ways in the upcoming season.
