A powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Tibet Autonomous Region of China on Thursday night, October 22, 2026, killing at least 16 people and injuring dozens of others. The earthquake caused extensive damage in the northern city of Nagqu, where hundreds of homes and livestock shelters collapsed, prompting large-scale search and rescue operations.
According to reports published on October 23, the number of injured people continued to rise as authorities assessed the damage and provided emergency assistance to affected communities. The disaster has triggered concerns about the safety of residents, particularly in remote, high-altitude areas where harsh weather conditions could complicate rescue efforts.
Earthquake Strikes Northern Tibet
The earthquake occurred at approximately 10:33 p.m. local time on Thursday in a sparsely populated area of northern Tibet, near Baqen County in Nagqu. According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicentre was located approximately 191 kilometres east-northeast of Nagqu, with the quake originating at a depth of around 18 kilometres.
The powerful tremor was felt across the surrounding region, waking residents and causing buildings to shake. Videos released by local media showed people rushing out of homes and businesses to seek safety outdoors and inside parked vehicles.
Nagqu is situated in a remote, mountainous region with an average elevation of more than 4,800 metres near the epicentre. The challenging terrain and high altitude present additional difficulties for emergency responders working to reach affected communities.
Death Toll and Damage to Buildings
At least 16 people have been confirmed dead, while the reported number of injured residents has increased as rescue and medical operations continue. Initial reports recorded 54 injuries, with subsequent updates indicating that the total had risen further.
The earthquake caused significant structural damage across affected areas. Local authorities reported that at least 339 homes and 20 livestock sheds had collapsed. Additional buildings sustained cracks and other damage, raising concerns about their stability during subsequent tremors.
Authorities are inspecting damaged structures and helping residents relocate to safer locations. The full extent of the destruction is still being assessed as emergency teams continue their work.
Rescue Teams Mobilised as Thousands Evacuated
Chinese authorities have deployed emergency personnel, police officers, firefighters and other rescue workers to the affected areas. More than 1,600 personnel from the local county were reported to have been mobilised for rescue operations.
Emergency supplies, including temporary housing units, tents, folding beds, flashlights and winter clothing, have been sent to support displaced residents.
More than 12,000 people were reported to have been relocated to safer locations as authorities worked to prevent further casualties. China’s President Xi Jinping also called for comprehensive rescue operations and prompt medical treatment for those injured in the earthquake.
The priority remains locating people who may need assistance, providing medical care and ensuring that residents have access to safe shelter.
Aftershocks and Weather Add to Concerns
The earthquake has also raised concerns about aftershocks, which can cause additional damage to buildings already weakened by the initial tremor.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, hundreds of aftershocks were recorded following the main earthquake, highlighting the continuing risks for residents and emergency workers.
The disaster has also disrupted transportation and communication in some areas. Railway authorities took emergency measures to halt trains passing through affected locations, while rockfalls forced the closure of part of National Highway 317. Access was restricted to emergency and authorised support vehicles as crews worked to clear debris.
Forecasts of intermittent snowfall over the following days could make rescue operations more challenging and increase the need for warm clothing, temporary shelter and essential supplies for displaced families.
A Reminder of Earthquake Preparedness
The tragedy in Nagqu highlights the destructive potential of major earthquakes, particularly in remote regions where damaged infrastructure and difficult terrain can delay emergency assistance.
Authorities continue to assess the damage, support affected communities and monitor seismic activity. Residents in earthquake-affected areas are being urged to remain cautious around damaged buildings and follow instructions issued by local emergency services.
As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on saving lives, treating the injured and helping displaced families recover from the disaster.
The situation remains developing, and casualty figures and damage assessments may change as further official updates become available.
