E-commerce giant Amazon has appointed Samir Kumar as the new Country Manager for India following the sudden departure of Manish Tiwary. Kumar, a veteran of Amazon since 1999, will take on operational responsibilities for the India market starting October 1, as announced by the company on Wednesday.
“Amazon’s 25-year veteran, Samir Kumar, will lead Amazon’s consumer business in India, as Manish Tiwary, the current Country Manager, has chosen to pursue an opportunity outside the company,” the update stated.
Tiwary, who has been at the helm of Amazon India operations since July 2020, resigned on August 6, reportedly due to differences with Amit Agarwal, Amazon’s Senior Vice President for Emerging Markets.
Agarwal praised Tiwary’s contributions, stating that he played a crucial role in positioning Amazon.in as the go-to platform for Indians to buy and sell products online. In an internal email, he added that “India remains a top priority for Amazon.”
Kumar’s appointment marks an additional responsibility, as he will continue to lead Amazon’s consumer businesses in the Middle East, South Africa, and Turkey. Agarwal expressed confidence in Kumar’s leadership, noting that his experience across emerging markets will further strengthen Amazon’s future growth in India.
Kumar, who was part of the team that launched Amazon.in in 2013, will now lead Amazon India under a dual leadership structure. According to the company, the leadership team of Saurabh Srivastava (Categories), Harsh Goyal (Everyday Essentials), Amit Nanda (Marketplace), and Aastha Jain (Growth Initiatives) will report to Kumar. Kishore Thota (Emerging Markets Shopping Experience) will report directly to Amit Agarwal.
