State Bank of India (SBI) had filed a petition seeking an extension till June 30 to make public the details of electoral bonds, which the Supreme Court on Monday rejected. Rejecting the petition of SBI in the electoral bond case, the Supreme Court has ordered to give details about it by the evening of March 12.
The bank’s application was dismissed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. The constitution bench headed by Chandrachud rejected it. A five-judge bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra directed the Election Commission of India to post on its official website on March 15 before 5 pm the SBI. Regarding the data, Justice Sanjiv Khanna said that you have to extract the data from the sealed cover and send it to us.
The Chief Justice asked the State Bank of India, “What work have you done in the last 26 days and how much data have you matched?” It is not reasonable to demand time for data matching.
The Supreme Court on Monday heard a plea by State Bank of India seeking an extension till June 30 to provide information on electoral bonds. The bench consisted of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra.
Notably, the electoral bond scheme was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court on February 15 and ordered the SBI to disclose the matter.
SBI had filed a petition in the Supreme Court on March 4 seeking time to “decode” the electoral bonds and match the donors with the donations. SBI said that this work will not be completed within the time frame of three weeks.
The Election Bond Scheme, 2018 was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in a judgment delivered on February 15 and ordered SBI to stop issuing them immediately. The court had ordered SBI to submit the details of electoral bonds purchased since April 2019 to the Election Commission of India by March 6 and the Election Commission to publish the details on its official website.
