Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has emphasized the legal obligations of social media platforms in combating misinformation, following the circulation of a viral deepfake video featuring actor Rashmika Mandanna. Originally featuring Zara Patel, a British-Indian influencer, the video was manipulated using deepfake technology to replace her face with that of the actor.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Mr. Chandrasekhar underscored the Indian government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and trust of all digital citizens using the internet. He outlined the legal obligations imposed on social media platforms under the Information Technology (IT) rules, which were notified in April 2023.
According to the IT rules, platforms are legally obligated to prevent the dissemination of misinformation by users and must promptly remove such content when reported by users or the government. Failure to comply with these rules can result in legal action being taken against the platform under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the minister added. He also stressed the importance of addressing deepfakes, which he described as a highly dangerous and damaging form of misinformation.
Deepfakes involve the use of artificial intelligence to manipulate photos or videos, replacing individuals or elements within them. These have become a significant source of misinformation, often leading to the spread of fake viral content.
In the recent case, Zara Patel, who boasts over 400,000 Instagram followers, shared a video in which her appearance in a black outfit is transformed into that of Ms. Mandanna as she enters an elevator.
Responding to the situation, Rashmika Mandanna posted a statement on X, expressing the need for urgent action against identity theft through deepfake technology. She emphasized the alarming and widespread implications of such misuse of technology on individuals’ vulnerability.
Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan also shared the video and underscored the necessity for new legal measures. Notably, Rashmika Mandanna made her Bollywood debut alongside Amitabh Bachchan in the movie ‘Goodbye.’
