Panaji, Nov 28: National Award-winning actress Vidya Balan spoke at a session on ‘Women and the Glass Ceiling’ during the ongoing 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) on Monday. Emphasizing on the progress of women in today’s world, he stressed the need to break the stereotypes prevalent in the society.
Vidya underlined the importance of the portrayal of women in Indian cinema, saying, “We all need to remove the stereotypes prevalent in our society regarding women. Women in today’s world are far ahead of their times.” She highlighted the impact of past exceptional characters played by female actors in Indian films, and their desire to achieve more, which contributed to the current phase where women-oriented stories are told in films.
Expressing her eagerness to play diverse characters, Vidya stressed the importance of exploring new stories and characters that would appeal to the audience. He stressed the importance of playing unconventional roles and staying true to oneself while playing those characters.

When asked about her inspiration for playing versatile characters in each film, Vidya revealed that the inspiration comes from her desire to tackle unimaginable roles and break the stereotypes associated with female characters in cinema. He expressed his love for the idea of stepping out of his comfort zone in each film, admitting that it requires a lot of hard work but is ultimately liberating for him.
In her two decade long career, Vidya Balan has acted brilliantly in films like ‘Parineeta’, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’, ‘Paa’, ‘Kahaani’, ‘The Dirty Picture’, ‘Shakuntala Devi’ and ‘Sherni’. , among others, demonstrated his ability to play unconventional roles with finesse.
