In 2007, veteran actor Manoj Kumar expressed deep dissatisfaction with a scene in the film Om Shanti Om, directed by Farah Khan and starring Shah Rukh Khan. The contentious scene portrayed Shah Rukh Khan’s character using Manoj Kumar’s pass to enter a movie premiere, leading to a comedic sequence where security fails to recognize him due to Kumar’s signature gesture of covering his face with his hand. This portrayal led Manoj Kumar to state, “I am hurt. Shah Rukh Khan has injured my soul. It’s a conspiracy to humiliate and ridicule me.”
Following this, Manoj Kumar demanded the removal of the scene and sought legal counsel regarding potential defamation charges. Shah Rukh Khan publicly apologized, acknowledging the oversight and expressing regret for any offense caused. He stated, “I was completely wrong… If he is hurt, I apologise.”
Despite assurances, the scene remained in the film’s Japanese release in 2013, prompting Manoj Kumar to file a defamation lawsuit against Shah Rukh Khan and Eros International, seeking ₹100 crore in damages. He felt that his previous concerns were disregarded, leading to his decision to pursue legal action.
Ultimately, Manoj Kumar withdrew the lawsuit, expressing disappointment that the legal proceedings did not instill a sense of responsibility in the filmmakers. He remarked that despite the legal measures, the lack of accountability persisted.
This incident highlighted the complexities of artistic expression and respect for individuals’ legacies in the film industry.
