Actor Kamal Haasan has announced that his upcoming film Thug Life will not be released in Karnataka, following controversy over his recent remarks about the Kannada language. During a promotional event, Haasan stated that “Kannada is born out of Tamil,” which led to backlash from Kannada organizations and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), who demanded a public apology.
Haasan has refused to apologize, asserting that his comments were made without malice and that apologies are warranted only for mistakes, not misunderstandings. Consequently, the KFCC has imposed a ban on the film’s release in the state, and the Karnataka High Court has expressed dissatisfaction with Haasan’s stance, emphasizing that public sentiments should not be hurt.
Despite the controversy, Haasan has expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with the KFCC to resolve the issue. In the meantime, fans have rallied in support of the actor, with the hashtag “#IStandWithKamalHaasan” trending on social media.
The Karnataka High Court has scheduled the next hearing on the matter for June 10, 2025.
