Sep 5 – According to state media, authorities in China’s Shanxi province have detained two persons for allegedly breaking a part of the Great Wall with an excavator.
According to CCTV, the authorities in Youyu county got notification on August 24 that a crack in the wall had been constructed in Yangqianhe township.
According to CNN, authorities discovered that a 38-year-old male and a 55-year-old woman used an excavator to breach the wall in order to establish a shortcut to pass through, causing “irreversible” damage to the integrity and safety of that piece of the wall.
According to police, the investigation is still ongoing.
The 32nd Great Wall section is one of the few remaining full walls and guard towers from the Ming period (1368-1644) and is designated as a provincial cultural relic monument.
In 1987, the Great Wall of China was designated a Unesco World Heritage Site.
