The Karnataka government today cleared Congress’s five “guarantees” made before the recent Assembly elections, offering clarifications, explaining conditions, and announcing timeframes.
“Today, we had a cabinet meeting.” We thoroughly discussed all five commitments. “We have decided to implement all five guarantees in the current fiscal year,” Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated today. The Chief Minister recalled that he and Karnataka Congress president and now Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar had signed the guarantee cards and vowed to carry out all commitments and ensure that they were delivered to the people.
The free electricity scheme (Gruha Jyoti) would be based on annual household use. A monthly average will be calculated, an additional 10% added, and the power bill will be waived if the final amount is less than 200 units.
Bank accounts must be linked to Aadhaar in order to receive the 2,000 monthly help from Gruha Lakshmi. Due to technical issues with Aadhaar connection and ascertaining who is the family head, the verification procedure will begin on June 15 and end on July 15, when payments will begin. This scheme is available to both BPL and Antyodaya cardholders. Those who already get social security pensions will receive an additional 2,000 if she is the head of the family.
Anna Bhagya guarantees a guaranteed 10 kg of rice to every BPL household member. “We used to give 7 kg (under the previous administration), but they (the BJP) reduced it to 5 kg.” “All members of BPL families will now receive 10 kg of rice per head,” he stated. This will take effect on July 1.
The Chief Minister announced free bus travel for women throughout the state in state-run buses beginning June 11 under the Uchita Prayana promise. In Karnataka State Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses, 50% of the seats would be reserved for men only.
Youth who are unemployed for six months after receiving their degree can apply for 3,000 per month for 24 months as part of the Yuva Nidhi guarantee. This includes transgender individuals. Unemployed diploma holders will be paid 1,500 each month.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised the Congress in Rajasthan, the next major electoral battleground ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, expressing concerns about the stability of its government and its “guarantee formula” for state elections.
“The Congress has devised a new guarantee formula.” But are they keeping their promises? “Their guarantees will bankrupt the country,” he said.
“Fifty years ago, Congress promised to eliminate poverty. “However, it turned out to be their greatest betrayal of the poor,” Prime Minister Modi added.
The implementation of the five ‘guarantees’ declared by the Congress might cost up to 50,000 crore every year. When asked about the expense of the welfare measures, key party leaders emphasised that they could not be called “freebies” because they were tools of empowerment.
The ‘guarantees’ apparently resonated with voters, particularly women, in the May 10 Assembly elections, and played a crucial role in the party’s landslide victory.
