Mumbai, Nov 22: After industrialist Anand Mahindra expressed disappointment over individuals dumping garbage in the Arabian Sea near the Gateway of India, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took swift action on Tuesday. Earlier a video had surfaced, showing four unidentified persons taking off large blue plastic bags filled with dried flowers and garlands from a taxi and throwing them into the sea.
Stunned locals silently watched the act, with some pedestrians carefully recording the incident and sharing it on social media. The video quickly went viral, catching the attention of Anand Mahindra, who expressed his disappointment in a social media post, stressing the need for a change in citizen attitudes.
It hurts just to see this. No amount of improvement in physical infrastructure can improve the city’s quality of life if the civic attitude isn’t transformed. @IqbalSinghChah2 @MumbaiPolice https://t.co/Efh0ssHQ3f

In response to Mahindra’s post, BMC took swift action to identify the culprits using the taxi numbers. Following this, the A ward imposed a heavy fine of Rs 10,000 on the offenders. The BMC highlighted the public outrage generated by photographs and videos of the incident near the iconic tourist spot, which led to punitive measures. This incident underlines the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining the cleanliness and environmental health of public spaces.
