Sep 8 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to New Delhi today following a brief but beneficial visit to Indonesia to attend the ASEAN-India and East Asia summits, where he reaffirmed India’s strong connections with the countries in the strategically important area.
The Prime Minister arrived in Jakarta, Indonesia, early in the morning.
“PM @narendramodi concludes his visit to Indonesia, forging stronger partnerships with ASEAN and EAS partners,” the Ministry of External Affairs posted on X.
“Had a very short but fruitful Indonesia visit, where I met ASEAN and other leaders. I thank President @jokowi, the Indonesian Government and the people for their welcome,” Prime Minister Modi posted on X.
“The Prime Minister has just completed a very short but very productive visit to Jakarta to participate in the ASEAN-India Summit and the East Asia Summit,” Secy (East) Saurabh Kumar said.
The Prime Minister’s attendance in the summit will provide a strategic direction for India-ASEAN ties. According to the Prime Minister, he conducts extensive discussions on topics such as connectivity, maritime cooperation, digital transformation, commerce and the economy, the environment, health, and traditional medicine.
The Prime Minister offered explicit ideas in each of them, which have already been released in the form of a 12-point proposal. India and ASEAN released two joint statements. These are related to marine cooperation and food security, according to Mr Kumar.
marine cooperation has addressed issues such as marine safety and security, maritime domain awareness, disaster management, and so on. Millets take the stage in the food security minute. He claims that it benefits both food security and the ecology.
The Prime Minister announced the establishment of an ASEAN-India digital future fund. This will allow ASEAN and India to integrate financially.
Prime Minister Modi also announced funding for the ASEAN think-tank, which would serve as our knowledge partner in furthering ASEAN-India relations.
The Prime Minister has also announced the establishment of an Indian embassy in Timor-Leste. Timor-Leste is an observer in the ASEAN, according to Kumar.
During his meetings and conversations, the Prime Minister advocated for a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific. He also emphasised the importance of amplifying the voice of the Global South, notably in the G20.
Leaders congratulated the Prime Minister on his G20 leadership and wished him luck, Kumar added.
They also congratulated India on the successful completion of the Chandrayaan 3 mission. They stated they share India’s achievements and consider it a source of pride for them, he said.
During his speech to the East Asia Summit, the Prime Minister called for everyone’s commitment and joint efforts to strengthen all countries’ sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“The current global scenario is surrounded by difficult circumstances and uncertainties. Terrorism, extremism, and geo-political conflicts are big challenges for all of us,” PM Modi said.
“To face these, multilateralism and rules-based international order are important. It is necessary to completely follow international laws. And everyone’s commitment and joint efforts are also necessary to strengthen the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries,” he said.
“As I have said before – today’s era is not of war. Dialogue and diplomacy is the only way to the solution,” PM Modi noted.
