Guyana has expressed strong and unequivocal support for India in its fight against terrorism, particularly in the aftermath of the tragic Pahalgam attack in Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali condemned the attack in the strongest terms, describing it as a “heinous act of violence” and a “tragic reminder of the devastating impact of extremism.” In a formal letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he emphasized that “violence is never a solution; it only perpetuates a cycle of pain and loss,” and affirmed Guyana’s solidarity with India in mourning and in the pursuit of justice.
Additionally, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a phone conversation with Guyanese Foreign Minister Hugh Hilton Todd, during which they discussed the Pahalgam terrorist attack and the imperative to combat terrorism in all its forms. Jaishankar expressed appreciation for Guyana’s support and reaffirmed the importance of international cooperation in addressing such threats.
This exchange underscores the deepening partnership between India and Guyana, particularly in areas of defense and security cooperation. During Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Guyana in November 2024, both nations committed to enhancing collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts, including joint exercises, training, and information sharing.
Guyana’s stance reflects a broader regional consensus, as other Caribbean leaders have also condemned the Pahalgam attack and expressed solidarity with India. This collective response highlights the shared commitment to combating terrorism and promoting peace.
