Bengaluru, October 14: Income Tax Department investigators discovered a huge amount of cash worth crores of rupees hidden under a bed in a Bengaluru flat, according to sources on Friday. IT officials are currently interrogating a former woman councilor and her husband in this matter.
Sources have suggested that large amounts of money are being raised from gold jewelery sellers and other sources in Bengaluru to finance assembly elections in five states with a special focus on Rajasthan. On receiving information about these activities, the IT department started raids inside the city.
During a raid late on Thursday night, cash worth Rs 42 crore was recovered in a flat located in Atmanand Colony near RT Nagar. Reportedly, the cash included Rs 500 notes kept in 23 boxes under the bed. IT officials, acting on a tip-off, had raided two locations in RT Nagar, and cash was found at one of the locations.
Sources say that the flat was vacant and no one was seen living there. However, IT investigators have not revealed the details of the owner of the flat. After this revelation, IT officials are interrogating the former councilor and her husband at their residence.
According to sources, the councilor’s husband is a contractor and a member of the Contractors Association, which had earlier accused the former BJP government of demanding 40 per cent commission on projects. The contractor had also accused many political leaders of corruption. Additional information about this incident is expected to emerge in the future.
