The ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj has led to unprecedented traffic congestion, with reports indicating jams extending up to 300 kilometers. Lakhs of devotees have been stranded for hours, unable to reach the holy city for the religious gathering.
The congestion has been so severe that authorities have halted vehicular movement in multiple districts to prevent further overcrowding. In some areas, police have advised vehicles to turn back and find temporary shelter.
In response to the crisis, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticized the administration’s handling of the event and urged authorities to address the plight of stranded devotees. He also suggested making vehicles toll-free across Uttar Pradesh during the Maha Kumbh to ease congestion.
To manage the situation, Mela police have implemented a ‘No Vehicle Zone’ on main ‘snan’ days, restricting vehicular movement to ensure the safety and convenience of pilgrims. Additionally, over 2 lakh vehicles have been stopped on Prayagraj’s outskirts to prevent chaos within the city.
Despite these measures, many devotees remain determined to reach Prayagraj for the sacred bath, enduring harsh conditions and long delays. Local authorities and communities are stepping in to provide assistance, but the situation remains challenging.
With the Maha Kumbh continuing until February 26, authorities face mounting pressure to resolve the traffic chaos and ensure smoother movement for the remaining weeks of the grand religious gathering.
