Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated following a deadly militant attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 Indian tourists dead. In the wake of the attack, Pakistan initiated small arms firing across multiple locations along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, including the Uri, Poonch, and Nowgam sectors. These incidents occurred just hours before Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi’s scheduled visit to Srinagar and Udhampur to assess the security situation .
The Indian Army responded effectively to the ceasefire violations, with no casualties reported on the Indian side. This marks the first significant breach of the 2021 ceasefire agreement between the two nations in recent times .
In response to the Pahalgam attack, India has taken several diplomatic measures, including downgrading ties with Pakistan, suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, and closing the Attari-Wagah border crossing. Pakistan, denying involvement, has countered by suspending visas for Indian nationals and closing its airspace to Indian flights .
The situation remains tense, with both nations exchanging warnings and the international community urging restraint to prevent further escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
