India marked a significant milestone in its journey towards green and sustainable transportation as Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually flagged off the country’s first hydrogen-powered train from Jind in Haryana. The launch is a major step in Indian Railways’ mission to reduce carbon emissions and adopt cleaner technologies.
The hydrogen train, developed under the “Hydrogen for Heritage” initiative, is designed to run on hydrogen fuel cells instead of conventional diesel engines. The eco-friendly train emits only water vapour, making it a zero-emission alternative that supports India’s climate goals and commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
The inaugural event witnessed enthusiastic participation from railway officials, state leaders, and local residents. Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of innovation in India’s transport sector, stating that the hydrogen train represents the country’s growing technological capabilities and commitment to sustainable development.
The train will initially operate on the Jind-Sonipat heritage route in Haryana. Indian Railways plans to gradually introduce more hydrogen-powered trains across select routes, particularly on non-electrified tracks, to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and lower operational costs.
Hydrogen fuel cell technology generates electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water as a by-product. Compared to diesel locomotives, hydrogen trains are quieter, cleaner, and more energy-efficient, making them an attractive solution for future rail transportation.
The launch also aligns with the Government of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position the country as a global hub for the production, use, and export of green hydrogen. The initiative is expected to encourage innovation, generate employment, and strengthen India’s clean energy ecosystem.
Officials from the Ministry of Railways said that the successful deployment of the hydrogen train would pave the way for wider adoption of green technologies across the railway network. The project is expected to contribute significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while improving the sustainability of public transport.
