On December 11, Alla Ramakrishna Reddy, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), formally submitted his resignation, following a Speaker format, to the Assembly Speaker. Simultaneously, he resigned from his party membership. Mr. Ramakrishna Reddy expressed gratitude to the people of Mangalagiri for electing him twice and acknowledged their support during his tenure.
Speaking to the media, he stated that the decision to resign was a difficult yet necessary one. Due to the Speaker’s unavailability, the resignation was submitted to his Officer on Special Duty (OSD). He thanked Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for providing him the opportunity to contest twice. While resigning from his MLA post and party membership, he cited personal reasons and promised to disclose his future plans soon.
Although the resignation came abruptly, it was not entirely unexpected. Reports suggest that Mr. Ramakrishna Reddy was dissatisfied with recent political developments and the perceived lackluster response from officials to issues concerning his constituency. Speculation in political circles indicates that he might not be fielded as a candidate from Mangalagiri constituency in the 2024 elections, with rumors suggesting the YSRCP could nominate a candidate from the Backward Classes (BC) community.
Mr. Ramakrishna Reddy won as an MLA in 2014 and was re-elected in 2019, defeating prominent weaver community representative Ganji Chiranjeevi, a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidate, in 2014 and securing a substantial victory over TDP national general secretary Nara Lokesh in 2019.
Despite expectations, Mr. Ramakrishna Reddy was not included in the Cabinet, and subsequent political developments, including the induction of Ganji Chiranjeevi into the YSRCP, altered the equations.
Notably, Mr. Ramakrishna Reddy had been vocal against the residence of former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in Undavalli. He lodged a complaint, leading to an investigation by the Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department (CID). The subsequent attachment orders issued by the Home Department were based on the CID’s investigation, prompted by Mr. Ramakrishna Reddy’s complaint against Naidu and Lingamaneni Ramesh, the residence’s owner.
The government’s order, outlined in G.O. Ms. No. 89 on May 12, 2023, detailed the CID’s findings, stating, “The CID investigated these allegations based on the complaint given by the YSR Congress Party Alla Rama Krishna Reddy, MLA from Mangalagiri Assembly Constituency.” The CID case registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act implicated Naidu in alleged wrongdoing.
