Newlyweds Raja (29) and Sonam Raghuvanshi (25), from Indore, embarked on their honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 20, 2025. Three days later, on May 23, they vanished after trekking near Cherrapunji’s Nongriat area. Raja’s mutilated body—his throat slit and valuables missing—was found nearly ten days later at the bottom of a gorge by Wei Sawdong Falls, prompting a murder investigation.
The 2,000 km Flight Across India
Following the murder, Sonam allegedly began a dramatic escape. Police allege she traveled over 2,000 km: first returning to Indore, Madhya Pradesh, where she met her alleged lover in a rented accommodation. From there, she moved toward eastern Uttar Pradesh. Her trail ended at a roadside dhaba in Ghazipur. There, disheveled and emotionally distressed, she called her brother and was soon located by authorities.
Alleged Murder Plot
Investigators claim that Sonam orchestrated her husband’s murder by allegedly hiring four men, including her rumored lover, Raj Kushwaha, to carry out the act during the honeymoon. A local Khasi guide’s testimony played a key role—he reported seeing the couple with three unknown men just before Raja disappeared. Further proof included CCTV footage, mobile phone records, and forensic inconsistencies, like that early morning social media post made from Raja’s account after his presumed death.
Confession & Arrests
Sonam reportedly confessed to her role after police presented substantial evidence. She broke down in tears while admitting to involvement. By June, Sonam and three suspected accomplices—Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi—were arrested; a fourth suspect remains at large.
Family Reactions & Ongoing Inquiry
Raja’s family, particularly his brother, initially criticized authorities for their delayed response. They’ve since accepted Sonam’s alleged culpability, while Sonam’s father maintains she was abducted and denies her involvement, even calling for a CBI probe. The Meghalaya SIT continues to gather evidence and finalize legal proceedings.
In summary, Sonam Raghuvanshi is accused of planning her husband’s murder during their honeymoon, then fleeing through multiple states over 2,000 km. Police allege she coordinated with accomplices and eventually surrendered after being tracked down at a dhaba in Uttar Pradesh. The case remains under intense investigation.
