Mumbai, November 23: A massive fire broke out in the 24-storey MHADA building, No. 3-C, at Ghorapadeo in Byculla, south Mumbai, in the early hours of Thursday. The fire broke out on the third floor of the building at around 3:30 am. Despite it being late at night, a large number of residents, around 136, were stranded on various floors.
A major rescue operation was carried out by the Mumbai Fire Brigade and other emergency services. According to BMC disaster control, a total of 136 residents were successfully evacuated, including 25 from the terrace, 30 from the 15th level shelter floor and 80 from the 22nd shelter floor.
The fire, the cause of which is unknown, was confined to electric meter cabins, wiring, cables, installations and some scrap and garbage materials in waste ducts extending from the 1st to 24th floors.
After more than four hours of hard work, firefighters brought the fire under control in the early morning. The noteworthy thing is that there is no report of any casualty in this incident.
