New Delhi, October 19: The Supreme Court has issued a notice to Delhi Police in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case on the petition of Newsclick founder and editor-in-chief Prabir Purkayastha. HR head Amit Chakraborty and Newsclick founder and editor-in-chief Prabir Purkayastha have filed the petition, challenging their police custody in the case under the law.
The arguments made on this petition were heard by Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice P.K. Mishra listened and issued a notice to Delhi Police. A reply to this notice has been sought within three weeks.
The case will be listed for the next hearing on October 30.
It has been alleged that the news portal was asked to pay money to run propaganda supporting China.
The petition filed by Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakraborty was rejected by the Delhi High Court last week and their judicial custody was upheld. Both of them have been in judicial custody since October 10.
On October 3, Delhi Police raided the Newsclick office, residences of news portal editors, residences of news portal journalists, etc., and many other related places. After that, both were arrested.
When their petitions were rejected by the High Court, Purkayastha moved to the apex court.
