Gujarat: Man commits suicide after losing Rs 50 lakh in betting
A man committed suicide by consuming poison after losing Rs 50 lakh in betting, the police said here on Wednesday.
According to sources in the Surat Municipal Institute of Medical and Research, Manish Dholakia (49) died soon after he was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition. The hospital authorities informed the police after inspecting his bag where they found a suicide note.
The police said that Manish was a sales manager with a leading electronics company.
In the suicide note, Manish wrote: “I have lost Rs 50 lakh in betting and in casino. I am not in a position to repay this amount to the lenders… Their pressure is mounting. Hence I am taking the extreme step.”
The police have registered a case of suicide and taken up the investigation.
24-yr-old resident doctor commits suicide in Bhopal
Aakanksha Maheshwari, a 24-year-old post-graduate resident doctor working at Bhopal’s Hamidia Hospital, allegedly committed suicide by injecting some suspicious chemical into her body.
The police claimed to have recovered a suicide note, in which Aakanksha wrote: “I can’t take that much stress.”
However, the police are yet to reveal more details in the case, stating that the matter is under investigation.
“Senior officers have joined the probe. The other doctors and her colleagues at the hospital are being questioned. The development has shocked her friends and family. We can’t comment more on the case until we get the autopsy report,” a police officer said.
Aakanksha was found dead at her hostel room in Gandhi Medical College (GMC) at around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Sources told IANS that Aakanksha was on duty in the morning, but she returned to her hostel room early complaining of illness.
Later in the evening, when some other resident doctors returned to their hostel rooms, they noticed that Aakanksha’s room was closed. Later, she was found lying unconscious in her room.
Senior doctors, including the head of GMC and the dean, rushed to the spot after informing the police, one of the resident doctors told IANS.
Aakanksha, who hailed from Gwalior, had recently enrolled for MD in Pediatrics at the Gandhi Medical College, the biggest state-run medical college in Madhya Pradesh.
The college is located within the campus of Hamidia Hospita.
Delhi horror repeats in UP: Woman hit by truck, dragged for 3 km
Even as the outrage over the Delhi girl being dragged by a car continues, a similar incident has come to light in Uttar Pradesh where a woman riding a scooty was hit by a truck that dragged her body for 3 km.
The ghastly incident took place in Mawai Buzurg village of Banda district.
As per initial reports, the truck caught fire as the woman’s body got stuck in the chasis. Even the scooty of the victim was burnt to ashes.
Fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire and police are trying to get the victim’s body out of the truck.
The victim’s name is Pushpa, who worked as a clerk at a university. She went out to buy household items when the accident took place.
After the accident, the truck reportedly dragged the woman for over 3 km. A number of passersby tried to stop the truck but the driver did not stop. The accident took place as there were no breakers in the area.
Two cops suspended for molesting woman in Kanpur
Two police constables have been suspended after they allegedly tried to molest a woman by entering her house at night in Kanpur.
A case has also been registered against both the accused.
The two constables, according to reports, reached Lalpur intersection of Naubasta police station area after receiving information regarding a scuffle in the area. The scuffle was between a vegetable vendor and a man who fled the scene after seeing the police.
After sometime, the policemen, who were allegedly in a drunk state, barged into the vegetable vendor’s house. When the man opened the gate, the policemen pushed him away and entered the house where his wife was present and allegedly started molesting the woman.
When the woman raised an alarm, the people of the area chased both the constables and caught them.
On receiving information about the incident, police officers including ADCP reached the spot.
The official informed that an FIR has been registered after getting a complaint from the victim. “All the allegations made by the woman are being investigated. Action is being taken by suspending both the constables,” said the police official.
A video of the incident that is going viral on social media shows the victim slapping the accused policeman.
One held for forcing conversion in UP district
The Hardoi police have arrested one Kamlesh Kumar, 45, under the provisions of UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act.
Police said Kamlesh had organised a ceremony at his house in Sandila on December 31 evening in the garb of a New Year’s Eve party where he tried to forcefully convert the ‘guests’ to Christianity.
Last week, 23 people were arrested in Sitapur for forcefully converting people to Christianity.
Inspector in-charge of Sandila police station, Dharmendra Giri, said that Kamlesh, who runs a grocery store, had organised a party at his house in Tikar Mazra which was attended by over 40 people.
“One of the guests, Bablu Dayal, told the police that Kamlesh first tried to convince everyone that Hindu religion was no good and later forced gullible locals to convert to Christianity,” Giri said.
Dayal also told the police that Kamlesh also assured them regular financial help apart from jobs and employment.
“We will take him on remand and will grill him,” Giri said.
Sources said the accused knew some pastors in Sitapur and frequently visited them.
6 pilgrims killed, 16 injured in road accident in K’taka
Six pilgrims were killed and 16 others injured in a road accident near the Chunchanura village in Belagavi district in the early hours of Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Hanumavva (25), Deepa (31), Savitha (17), Supreetha (11), Indiravva (24) and Maruthi (42).
The deceased were travelling towards the famous Saundatti Yallamma Temple from Hulanda village. The incident happened when the Bolero vehicle in which they were travelling turned turtle while negotiating a curve after the driver lost control and also rammed a banyan tree before toppling.
Police said that the deceased were walking towards the temple and in the midway, the vehicle driver who saw them walking insisted on giving a lift.
Few minutes after they boarded the accident took place killing five persons on the spot and another died while being taken to the hospital. Preliminary investigation revealed that the accident had taken place due to the rash and negligent driving.
The Bolero goods vehicle was carrying 23 passengers. About 16 persons were injured in the incident and they have been shifted to nearby hospitals. Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjeev Patil rushed to the spot.
Minister for Water Resources and District In-charge Govinda Karajol has announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to the families of the victims. Condoling the deaths, he had stated that he will pray for the speedy recovery of the injured persons. Katakola police have taken up the investigation of the case.
At minus 6.4 Srinagar records coldest night of season
At minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, J&K’s Srinagar city recorded the coldest night of the season so far on Thursday.
The Meteorological (MeT) office forecast severe cold and dry weather to continue for the next 24 hours.
“Cold dry weather is expected to continue during the next 24 hours in J&K and Ladakh. Sky is likely to remain clear during this period,” an official of the MeT department said.
At minus 6.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday, Srinagar recorded the second lowest winter temperature in the last five years. In 2021, the minimum temperature had dropped to minus 8.8 in Srinagar on January 31.
Pahalgam recorded minus 9.2 and Gulmarg minus 7.5 as the minimum temperature.
In Ladakh region, Kargil recorded minus 19.2 and Leh minus 15.2 as the minimum temperature.
Jammu had 7.3, Katra 6.3, Batote 3, Banihal 5.2 and Bhaderwah minus 0.4 as the minimum temperature.
