‘Neighbourhood’ policing in Coimbatore to reign in anti-social elements
Coimbatore police has formally rolled out the “Neighbourhood Police” strategy to rein in anti-social elements of the city.
As part of the plan, the police department will deploy its personnel in every area who will act against the anti-social elements.
Details of the policeman concerned will be displayed prominently in the assigned area.
The public can communicate with the policeman regarding the wrong activities taking place in their neighbourhood.
They need not visit the police station and can contact policemen responsible for their areas with their grievances and concerns.
To make the process easier, every policeman will be provided with visiting cards containing his contact details besides information about the respective police stations.
Details of senior officers will also be included in the cards and can be contacted in case the local policeman fails to perform his activities.
A senior officer of Coimbatore police told IANS, “The idea is to curb anti-social activities. The neighbourhood police can actively work among the local residents and learn about suspicious activities in their localities. The October 23rd Coimbatore car blast in which a radicalised youth, Jameesha Mubin died is a reason for such an initiative as people will come to know to whom they were renting out their premises if a proper background check is conducted.”
He, however, said that preventing crimes is a major initiative and curbing terrorism is also an agenda for the city police taking initiative.

UP: Two held for setting up fake FCI office, duping job aspirants
The police have arrested two members of a gang that had created an office of Food Corporation of India (FCI) in a rented building at Mahanagar for running a fake recruitment drive for the FCI since last year.
The gang conducted interviews to win the job-seekers’ confidence and later issued fake appointment letters to select a few. However, before those who got appointment letters could realise that they were duped, the gang wrapped up the entire setup and fled.
The police managed to arrest two gang members, Neeraj Pandey and Jitendra Kailash, after a year-long electronic surveillance from near Nishatganj flyover on Sunday.
A non-bailable warrant (NBW) was issued against the duo.
The police said that it all started when one Manish Kumar Rai on June 14, 2021, lodged an FIR alleging that the arrested duo had taken Rs 1.75 crore on pretext of a job in FCI.
The police said that Manohar Rai, Aryan Anand, Munna Kumar, Ajay Yadav, Subedar Rajbhar, Afroz Khan along with 12 others had given Rs 1.75 crore to the accused.
The probe revealed the gang members initially used to target students near coaching institutes telling them about Group C and Group D jobs in the FCI.
Later, a member of the gang used to meet the candidates in a hotel and take a token money of Rs 2 lakh from each of the candidates.
“Those who paid Rs 2 lakh were asked to appear for an interview with Rs 2 lakh again. Those who paid the sum were then asked to go for an interview which was conducted in a two-storey building pasted with FCI insignia and lookalike government office. The gang members posted in the office were clad in uniform bearing the emblem and monogram of FCI,” the police added.
The jobs were those of depot managers and office in-charge of FCI.
One of the gang members had even appeared as the general manager of FCI and took interviews, while each member who appeared in the interview was asked to give Rs 5 lakh more for the confirmation of appointment, the police said.
The accused agreed to shell more and were handed appointment letters, the police said. When the candidates reached the FCI for joining, they got to know that they were duped.
SHO Mahanagar, K.K. Tiwari, said teams were formed to arrest other members of the gang and added that both the accused were in private jobs in New Delhi before they indulged in crime in 2021.

Youth stabbed to death in UP over year-old Instagram reel
A 20-year-old college student was allegedly stabbed to death in full public view near Palhari Crossing in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki, following a physical confrontation between two groups over an Instagram reel made a year ago, police said.
The victim, Shuganto Sharma, had previously filed a police complaint after which he allegedly received threat calls from the other group members, who had made a reel of thrashing Sharma in December last year.
Shuganto worked for a telecom company while pursuing his graduation degree from a local college.
The police, who took one of the key accused in the case into custody, said Shuganto’s family lodged a complaint against three persons with whom he had a year-old dispute.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) (South), Akhilesh Narain Singh said that Shuganto’s brother Saurabh had informed the police that the former was getting life threats since he had lodged an FIR against one Aman and Salim.
He said a case was registered against the accused and the charge-sheet was filed in January this year. However, the accused, who were out on bail, still threatened Shuganto on Instagram and other social media platforms.
The police official said that Shuganto received a similar threat call again after which he, with two of his friends, had a face-off with the other group members at a tea stall. The disagreement escalated after which Shuganto was stabbed and he died of fatal injuries at the district hospital.
“The assailants made a quick escape as the incident had triggered panic among the passers-by. Shuganto’s friends, Farhan and Shadab, also suffered injuries and were undergoing treatment at a local hospital. A heavy police force has been deployed at the crossing after the incident,” the official added.
The ASP said a case was registered under relevant sections for murder, attempt to murder, use of a deadly weapon and causing panic among the public in the IPC, against Aman, Salim and Raja, and other unidentified people connected to the case.
