Uttarkashi, November 14: Rescue efforts are underway after an under-construction tunnel collapsed due to a landslide on the Yamunotri National Highway in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Around 40 workers are trapped inside the tunnel, which is a vital part of the Char Dham project, which aims to connect Silkyara with Dangalgaon, reducing the distance between them by 25 km.
State Disaster Management Secretary Ranjit Kumar Sinha, who reached the spot after the landslide, assured that all the workers are safe. Food, water and oxygen are being supplied through pipelines to support the stranded workers. The rescue operation using JCB and other machinery to remove the debris may take one to two more days.
Despite the urgency, the area where the workers are located has enough oxygen for about five to six days, with additional oxygen being supplied through pipelines.
Uttarkashi SP Arpan Yaduvanshi said that the rescue operation is going on with the help of various agencies and technical experts. More than 20 meters of debris has been removed out of 60 meters and contact has been established with the family members of those trapped inside the tunnel.
