Aug 24 – According to Mamata Banerjee, Indira Gandhi asked ‘Rakesh Roshan’ how India appeared from orbit. Following the successful landing of Chandrayaan 3, the video became viral.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal and a key opposition leader, said on Wednesday that when ‘Rakesh Roshan reached the moon,’ Indira Gandhi asked him how India looked from there. Banerjee made the remarks following Isro’s Chandrayaan 3’s successful soft landing on the moon’s south pole on Wednesday. The video went viral after Mamata Banerjee mistook astronaut Rakesh Sharma for Bollywood celebrity Rakesh Roshan, father of Hrithik Roshan. In addition, Rakesh Sharma did not visit the moon. His conversation with Indira Gandhi took place in space. “Sare jahan see accha,” Rakesh Sharma replied to Indira Gandhi’s query, “Upar se Bharat kaisa dikhta hai aapko?”

“I remember when they reached the moon, Indira Gandhi asked Rakesh Roshan how India looked from there, for space,” Mamata Banerjee said. The video went viral, adding to the history of public displays of political figures’ ignorance about India’s historic and successful moon mission. Rajasthan sports minister Ashok Chandna, for example, thanked the ‘passengers’ on Chandrayaan 3 following its successful soft landing. Before the soft landing, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was asked about Chandrayaan 3. He evidently did not grasp the issue and sought clarification from the minister who was present.
While Nitish Kumar and Mamata, both main leaders of the INDIA alliance, came under scrutiny, they both sent congratulatory remarks on the success of Chandrayaan 3.
“By successfully landing Chandrayaan-3 on the moon, the country has created a new history in space for which every countryman is proud. This is the result of the hard work of ISRO scientists. Many congratulations to the entire ISRO team for this,” Nitish Kumar tweeted.
“Hail Chandrayaan-3!
Hail its stupendous success!!
Hail @isro!! Hail our nation’s magnificent achievement in sending an exploration mission successfully to the Moon!! Our scientists have testified the country’s scientific and technological progress. India is now in the super league of space. Sincere congratulations to all the proud architects and stakeholders of the expedition. Let us celebrate the majestic moment and pray for further advances of India in the frontier areas of knowledge and applications. Hail India, Jai Hind!” Mamata Banerjee tweeted.
