India secured a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Afghanistan in the recently concluded T20I series last week. The return of India’s skipper, Rohit Sharma, and star batter Virat Kohli to T20Is after a 14-month hiatus added excitement to the series. The third T20I, particularly, became captivating as the outcome was determined after two super-overs. Following a thrilling battle, Team India emerged victorious by 10 runs, clinching the series with a 3-0 scoreline.
Despite the success, the match stirred controversy when Rohit Sharma returned to bat in the second super over. In the initial super over, Rohit scored 14 runs before heading back to the dugout. Traditionally, a player cannot bat in the second super over if declared out in the first one. The circumstances surrounding Rohit’s return led to speculation, with questions arising about whether he was retired hurt or retired out.
Offering his perspective on the incident, South African cricket legend AB de Villiers asserted that a player cannot bat again if declared out in the first super over. He suggested that it might have been an error on the part of the broadcasters.
“Double Super Over unbelievable (smiles). You can’t bat again if you are declared out in the first super over. I think maybe they will claim that he was retired hurt due to an injury and maybe it was a scoring mistake to show him out,” De Villiers shared on his YouTube channel.
De Villiers also commended India batter Rinku Singh, highlighting him as a match-winner and emphasizing the importance of his consistency in securing victories.
“Rinku is a fantastic player, a match-winner, and it is good to see him become consistent as well. You need to be a consistent player who is always trying to win games for your team.”
Rinku Singh has been making a name for himself as a finisher for Team India, amassing 356 runs at an average of 89.00 and a strike rate of over 176 with two half-centuries in 15 games and 11 innings in T20Is.
