Sydney, Dec 9: Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Alyssa Healy is confident of returning to competitive cricket in time for the upcoming tour of India starting with the one-off Test in Mumbai on December 21.
Healy’s last competitive appearance was during the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in October. Unfortunately, he had to miss the remainder of the tournament due to an injury to his right index finger while attempting to stop a fight between his dogs, which required surgery.
Expressing her eagerness to get back on the field, Healy said, “I think I will be there (for the first Test in Mumbai). They’re going to have to do a lot to stop me from going out there and catching the first ball. Everything is going really well. I have started coming back to the nets in the last one and a half week, so I am all set to go to India on Wednesday for a big series.
Healy is likely to take up the role of Australia’s new captain following the unexpected retirement of Meg Lanning from international cricket. Having captained the team in Megg’s absence over the past 18 months, including in the Ashes in England this year, Healy expressed his excitement about the prospect of leading the team in a multi-format series against India.
“Obviously, we leave on Wednesday, so it would be great to have some sort of clarity and assurance for the team before we take off. If it were me, it would be incredibly exciting. I feel like I’ve been warming the seat for Meg’s return for 18 months and obviously, it was a bit of a shock with Meg’s news. Whoever gets the job, it will be really exciting to go to India and captain a multi-format series. If it’s me, then your beauty! He added.
The upcoming Test match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will be Australia’s first Test match in India since 1984. After the Test, the two teams will play a three-match ODI series and a three-match T20I series at different venues.
