In Asia Cup 2023 Gill, however, stood firm and reached his fifty in style with a magnificent six off Mahedi in the 20th over. Unfortunately, wickets kept falling at the other end. Ishan Kishan was trapped lbw by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Suryakumar Yadav, who used the sweep shot effectively, was eventually caught while attempting another one.
Gill’s brilliance shone through as he danced down the pitch, smashing two sixes off Shakib over long-on. Ravindra Jadeja’s wicket, as he missed a delivery attempting a cross-bat shot, didn’t deter Gill. He reached his century in 117 balls but was caught at long-off while attempting another big hit.
Axar Patel fought valiantly, surviving an lbw appeal and scoring crucial boundaries. He pulled and heaved Nasum for a four and a six, respectively, and lofted Mahedi for consecutive boundaries in the 48th over. Mustafizur Rahman, however, turned the tide in the next over. Shardul Thakur clipped a full-toss to square leg, and Axar was caught at long-off right after hitting a four, sealing Bangladesh’s hard-fought victory.
Before Bangladesh’s innings, they were struggling at 59/4. Shakib Al Hasan anchored the innings with a composed 80, forming a crucial 101-run partnership with Hridoy, who contributed a stylish 54. The lower-order trio of Nasum, Mahedi, and Tanzim played pivotal roles, scoring 44, 29 not out, and 14 not out, respectively, against an Indian bowling attack missing key players like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohammed Siraj.
Tanzid Hasan made an impressive start, striking three elegant boundaries. Mohammed Shami provided India’s first breakthrough, dismissing Litton Das with an incoming delivery. In the next over, Shardul Thakur removed Tanzid as he dragged the ball onto his stumps while attempting a pull shot.

Shakib also got an edge off Jadeja for four and danced down the pitch to hit Axar for two sixes, one of which brought up his 55th ODI fifty. He then got a lucky edge past the keeper for four and nailed the slog-sweep off Jadeja for six. Hridoy followed it up by hitting back-to-back fours off Shardul as the partnership reached 100 runs.
However, immediately after the drinks break, Shardul made a breakthrough, dismissing Shakib as he chopped the ball onto his stumps. Jadeja joined the action by trapping Shamim Hossain lbw to get his 200th ODI scalp. Hridoy reached his fifty by using Axar’s pace to guide the ball past backward point for four but was eventually caught in the deep mid-wicket region off Shami.
Bangladesh’s hopes of reaching the 250-run mark appeared bleak, but Nasum, Mahedi, and Tanzim displayed impressive stroke play, collectively adding 87 runs to guide their team to a winning total.
