Kolkata, November 17: Australia defeated South Africa in a tight semi-final at the Eden Gardens on Thursday to book a place in the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup final against India. Travis Head’s brilliant 62 along with contributions from Steven Smith (30), Josh Inglis (28), Mitchell Starc (16 not out), and captain Pat Cummins (14 not out) capped South Africa’s valiant effort in the three-wicket win. Facing a target of 213, the Australian openers, Travis Head and David Warner, scored at a brisk pace, with Head completing his half-century and Warner hitting a flurry of boundaries. However, the tension in the chase increased with the dismissal of Warner by Aiden Markram and the early dismissal of Mitchell Marsh. The head was lucky to escape the catch, continue his innings, and complete his half-century, but South Africa’s bowlers, including Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi, continued to create chances.
Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, and Josh Inglis all had moments of good fortune with dropped catches, but Shamsi eventually dismissed Labuschagne with a sharp-edged delivery. Shamsi continued to impress and removed Glenn Maxwell’s leg stump, reminiscent of Kuldeep Yadav’s style.
