Following Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) elimination from the IPL 2025 playoff race after a defeat to Punjab Kings (PBKS), discussions have intensified regarding MS Dhoni’s future with the franchise. Despite stepping down as captain in 2024, Dhoni’s role remains pivotal, and his potential retirement is a topic of considerable speculation.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has clarified that there have been no internal discussions about Dhoni’s retirement, emphasizing that any decision will be made solely by Dhoni himself. Viswanathan stated, “We have never asked him about his future and neither has he said anything about it. When he takes a decision, he will inform us, until then we will not interfere” .
Adding to the conversation, former South African cricketer Shaun Pollock commented on the evolving dynamics within CSK, suggesting that the team should consider building for the future without relying on Dhoni. Pollock remarked, “They don’t need him next year,” highlighting the importance of transitioning to a new leadership era.
As CSK reflects on a challenging season, the franchise faces crucial decisions about its direction and leadership, with Dhoni’s future being a central consideration.
