Dubai, November 22: A stop clock will be implemented to control the time between overs in international white-ball cricket matches starting in December. Teams that take more than 60 seconds between two overs will face a penalty of 5 runs if the delay is repeated for the third time in the match. The Chief Executives Committee (CEC) of the International Cricket Council (ICC) has agreed to introduce this stop clock on a trial basis in men’s ODI and T20I cricket from December 2023 to April 2024.
According to an ICC release on Tuesday, a stop clock will be used to manage time between overs. If the bowling team fails to start the next over within 60 seconds of completing the previous over, a penalty of 5 runs will be imposed if this happens for the third time in the innings.
Additionally, changes to pitch and outfield monitoring rules were approved. This includes simplifying the criteria for assessing pitches and increasing the threshold for a venue to lose international status from five demerit points to six demerit points over a five-year period. The purpose of these adjustments is to maintain the integrity and quality of playing conditions in international cricket.
