New Delhi, November 7: Sri Lanka’s versatile batting all-rounder Angelo Mathews made an unprecedented mark in international cricket during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium as he became the first player to be dismissed. ‘Timeout’.
After Shakib Al Hasan dismissed Sadira Samarawickrama for 41, Angelo Mathews, who was set to enter the field as Sri Lanka’s No. 6 batsman, faced a delay due to problems with his helmet. It seems that he might have inadvertently brought the wrong helmet and hence requested for a replacement.

Due to this, Shakib and Bangladesh team had to appeal for ‘time-out’. After an animated discussion with Mathews and the Bangladesh team, the on-field umpires declared Mathews ‘timed out’.
According to the rules laid down by the MCC: “At the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batsman, the next batsman must, unless time is called, be ready to receive the ball, or another batsman must be ready.” Receive the next ball within 3 minutes of being out or retiring. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in the visiting batsman being declared out, timed out.”
Till the time of writing the news, Sri Lanka had lost five wickets at the score of 180 in 32.3 overs. Charith Asalanka (62) and Dhananjay de Silva (14) were at the crease.
