India’s stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav opened up about his and Shubman Gill’s disappointing outing after India’s recent match, admitting that the top order cannot lean on Abhishek Sharma to rescue the innings every time.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Suryakumar acknowledged that both he and Gill failed to build momentum at the top, which eventually put pressure on the rest of the batting lineup. He praised Abhishek Sharma for once again stepping up but stressed that the responsibility must be shared.
“We can’t rely on Abhishek Sharma every time,” Suryakumar said bluntly. “Today, both Gill and I couldn’t convert our starts, and that cost us. Abhishek has been incredible, but as senior players we need to take charge and finish games.”
Abhishek Sharma, who has quickly become one of India’s most explosive young batters, has been in exceptional form, often stabilising innings after early setbacks. However, Suryakumar admitted that overdependence on the youngster is not sustainable, especially in competitive conditions.
Reflecting on his own performance, Suryakumar expressed disappointment but remained optimistic. “I’ve always believed in learning from tough days. We’ll go back, look at the mistakes, and come back stronger. It’s important for us as a unit to take responsibility.”
Shubman Gill echoed similar sentiments earlier, admitting that the top order must show better intent and awareness.
Despite the setback, India remains confident of bouncing back, with Suryakumar emphasising that consistency and smarter decision-making will be key going forward.
The team will look to regroup and correct its errors as it prepares for the next fixture, aiming to give Abhishek Sharma the support he deserves instead of relying on him as the lone saviour.
