Mumbai, November 3: Virat Kohli came very close to his 49th ODI century against Sri Lanka and missed it by just 12 runs. Kohli was looking in great form, on track to equal Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most ODI centuries, but was dismissed by Dilshan Madushanka for 88. The hope of equaling Tendulkar’s record in front of the legend at the Wankhede Stadium made the moment even more interesting. More important for Kohli. However, fate had something else in store. Kohli’s reaction in the dressing room after getting out has become a topic of viral discussion.
Kohli has performed exceptionally well in the World Cup with one century and four half-centuries. He is currently the second-highest run-scorer in the World Cup with 442 runs in seven matches.
Apart from Kohli coming close to a century, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer also missed reaching the three-figure mark. Gill was out on 92 runs, while Iyer was out on 82 runs. Despite these individual outings, India managed to post a strong score of 357-8 in their allotted overs. The performance of the team was commendable. It is noteworthy that victory against Sri Lanka will secure India’s place in the World Cup semi-finals. India remains the only undefeated team in the tournament, having won all six matches played so far.
Reflecting on the match, Shreyas Iyer provided an update on the game situation during the mid-innings break. “It was a very good wicket to bat on. The ball was coming in well, giving good bounce. I had a chance to settle down before playing my shots. The partnership between Gill and Kohli was exceptional; they skillfully hit singles, doubles , managed. and boundaries, laying a solid base for us. We knew that at times, the ball would stop and stop a bit, so their partnership was important and we benefited in the later stages, “Shreyas Iyer said.
