Aug 15 – Chelsea has signed Ecuador international midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton for a possible British record cost of 115 million pounds (146 million US dollars).
The base sum of 100 million pounds, plus 15 million pounds in add-ons, exceeds the 106 million pounds Chelsea paid Benfica earlier this month for Argentine international Enzo Fernandez. According to Xinhua, this move continues the club’s tremendous investment over the last year.
Caicedo chose the South London club over Liverpool and agreed to an eight-year contract. Brighton accepted Liverpool’s 111 million pound bid for the midfielder on Friday.
“I didn’t have to think twice when Chelsea called me, I just knew I wanted to sign for the club. It’s a dream come true to be here and I can’t wait to get started with the team,” said the player on the Chelsea website.
Caicedo joins Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku (who has a major knee injury), Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu, Angelo Gabriel, Robert Sanchez, and Diego Moreira as Chelsea’s seventh acquisition of the summer.
The club’s total summer spending has surpassed 285 million pounds, with nearly a billion pounds spent in the previous three transfer windows. However, player sales have exceeded 230 million pounds (292 million US dollars) for Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, and Ethan Ampadu.
Brighton expect to earn significantly from the sale of Caicedo, whom they signed from Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle in February 2021 for four million pounds (5.1 million US dollars).
