August 9 – Netflix has released a new application on the Apple App Store that allows users to play games on their TV.
According to the app’s description, the new ‘Netflix Game Controller’ app “pairs with your TV and allows you to play games on Netflix using your phone or mobile device.”
There has been no word on which of Netflix’s games will be adapted for the big screen.
According to TechCrunch, Netflix VP of gaming Mike Verdu stated in October last year that the business was “exploring a cloud gaming offering.”
He also stated that the business would establish a new game studio in Southern California, which would be overseen by Chacko Sonny, a former executive producer on Overwatch at Blizzard Entertainment.
Verdu also stated that he does not consider Netflix to be a competition to PlayStation or Xbox.
Leanne Loombe, Netflix’s VP of external games, discussed the company’s intentions for cloud gaming in May.
“We believe cloud gaming will allow us to provide easy access to games on any screen.” Our overarching goal is for our users to be able to play games on any Netflix device they own.”
The business was seen working on an iPhone-based game controller in March.
In July, Netflix launched a new customised tab called ‘My Netflix’ for Android and iOS, which is a “one-stop shop tailored to you with easy shortcuts to help you choose what you want to watch.”
