At the G7 ministers’ cultural meeting in Naples, Italy, significant risks posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the cultural sector were a key focus. The meeting concluded with a declaration from the G7 countries’ culture ministers, emphasizing how AI is increasingly influencing value chains in the cultural and creative industries. This shift is impacting the working conditions and livelihoods of culture professionals and threatening the sustainability of a vibrant cultural ecosystem.
The declaration, issued at the end of the three-day talks, stressed the need for collaboration to address the ethical, legal, economic, and social implications of Generative AI and AI-powered tools within the cultural and creative industries. Leaders also highlighted the importance of identifying and authenticating cultural content that has been wholly or partially generated, modified, or altered by AI systems, where technically feasible.
Italy’s 2024 presidency of the G7 has prioritized the challenges surrounding AI, with a particular focus on its impact on the cultural sector.
Meanwhile, protests took place in central Naples on Saturday morning in opposition to the G7 cultural meeting. Around fifty demonstrators rolled out a red carpet in a symbolic critique of what they described as a “political showcase.”
