Paris, November 1: A tense situation broke out at a metro station in Paris, where police fired at a woman wearing a hijab and seriously injured her. Paris police chief Laurent Nunez revealed that the woman was behaving in a threatening manner and shouting slogans such as “Allahu Akbar” and “You are all going to die”.
It comes at a time of high alert in France following the tragic murder of a school teacher on October 13 in what was suspected to be an Islamist attack. Authorities linked the incident to a “jihadist atmosphere”, related to the conflict between Israel and Gaza.
The woman, who was fully veiled, was shot at the Bibliothèque François-Mitterrand station after passengers reported her making offensive and jihadist remarks, as government spokesman Olivier Veran previously shared.
When the police arrived they tried to calm the situation. However, according to Veran, he had to use his firearms because he felt there was a real threat. The woman was shot in the stomach and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Even though the identity of the woman was not confirmed, there were indications that she may be the same person who, in 2021, had earlier made threats against an anti-terrorism patrol and was placed in a psychiatric facility due to mental health concerns. Was.
According to Nunez, the woman did not follow police instructions, causing officers to use their firearms. French media reports revealed that the woman had threatened to blow herself up, although no explosives were found on her at the time of the shooting.
After the incident, the metro station located on RER C line was evacuated. As a result, two investigations were launched: one focused on the woman and the other on the use of weapons by the police.
