An Indian national was killed after two oil tankers were struck in overnight attacks in the Gulf region as tensions continue to rise in the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The incident occurred near Iraq’s Basra coast when explosive-laden boats believed to be linked to Iranian forces targeted commercial vessels operating in the area.
One of the vessels hit in the attack was the oil tanker Safesea Vishnu, a large crude carrier owned by a U.S.-based company and sailing under the Marshall Islands flag. The ship was reportedly struck by an explosive boat during a ship-to-ship transfer operation in Iraqi waters, causing significant damage and triggering emergency rescue operations.
Authorities confirmed that one Indian crew member lost his life in the strike. The identity of the victim has not yet been officially released. The remaining 27 crew members on board were safely rescued and transported to Basra, where they received assistance from local authorities and maritime officials.
Officials said the attack was part of a broader escalation in the Gulf as several vessels have been targeted in recent days. Maritime security agencies reported that explosive boats and projectiles were used against multiple commercial ships, setting at least one tanker on fire and disrupting shipping routes in the region.
