Jerusalem, November 28 (UITV) – Israel has filed a formal notice with the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC), indicating plans to challenge the arrest warrant issued against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant. A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office in this regard said that Israel has also requested the ICC to put a stay on the warrant.
According to the statement of the Prime Minister’s Office, Israel has described this warrant as factually and legally “baseless”. He stressed that the decision to issue the warrant is not only wrong, but it has no valid basis. Israel has also completely denied the authority of the ICC and the validity of this warrant.
The ICC had issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu, Galant and Hamas military commander Mohammad Deif under charges of “crimes against humanity” and “war crimes” in Gaza between October 8, 2023 and May 20, 2024. These allegations have been made regarding the conflict in Gaza and the violence against civilians in it.
This warrant has received international support from countries like France and Norway. The French Foreign Ministry welcomed the ICC’s order and called it a “guarantee of international stability”. French Foreign Ministry spokesman Christophe Lemoine said that ICC orders would be followed under all circumstances.
Israel, in its appeal, has described the ICC’s decision as legally and factually weak. They claim that this warrant is only the result of political pressure and is aimed at targeting Israel. Israel says that this warrant violates the principles of fair justice.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has been established with the aim of holding accountable those who commit serious crimes such as war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. However, Israel has long challenged the legitimacy of the ICC and is not even a member of this court. Despite this, the ICC has issued this warrant, which can further escalate the dispute between Israel and the court.
This case is an example of the conflict between international politics and law, where on the one hand the ICC is taking action to protect human rights and justice, while on the other hand Israel is accusing it of politicization. In this situation, the legal and diplomatic battle between the ICC and Israel is likely to intensify. Countries supporting the warrant have called it an important step in international law, while Israel considers it an attack against its rights and sovereignty.
