Sep 9 – Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, announced her intention to run for a 19th term in Congress in November 2024.
Pelosi, 83, was initially elected to her San Francisco district in 1987 before serving two terms as speaker from 2007 to 2011, and again from 2019 to 2023, according to the BBC.
She led House Democrats for two decades until stepping down when Republicans won the election last year.
In a post on X on Friday, Pelosi said: “Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery.
“Our country needs America to show the world that our flag is still there, with liberty and justice for ALL. That is why I am running for re-election – and respectfully ask for your vote.”
Pelosi is the first female speaker of the House in US history.
She was largely praised with shepherding former President Barack Obama’s landmark healthcare legislation, as well as initiatives addressing infrastructure and climate change under Vice President Joe Biden.
Throughout his presidency, Pelosi has directly confronted Trump, notably ripping up a copy of his State of the Union address behind his back, according to the BBC.
She stepped aside as Democratic leader after Republicans reclaimed the House by a slim margin in last year’s election, and Kevin McCarthy was elected Speaker following a lengthy process.
