Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda has succeeded in winning the vote of confidence for the third time. The 69-year-old Prachanda won the trust vote today for the third time in the last 14 months since assuming office in December 2022.
Speaker Devraj Ghimire said that 157 out of 268 votes were cast in favor of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, while 110 MPs voted against him.
The Parliament Secretary said that when voting was taking place, 268 members out of 275 members were present in the House.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda’s supporters included the Rashtriya Swatantra Party, Communist Party of Nepal (UML), CPN (Unified Socialist) and some independent MPs.
Earlier, PM Prachanda had parted ways with the Nepali Congress and formed a new alliance with other parties including the Communist Party of Nepal.
In December 2022, Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda became the Prime Minister of Nepal with the support of CPN-UML, but within two months he broke this alliance and joined hands with the Nepali Congress.
With the support of the Nepali Congress, Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda won the confidence vote for the second time in March 2023 and inducted the ministers from the party, but his relations with the Nepali Congress did not go well.
Prachanda from the Nepali Congress broke its alliance in the first week of March and formed a new alliance with the UML and other parties. Some people even described this alliance as a Beijing-backed alliance.
UML Chairman KP Oli made it clear that China has had no role whatsoever in the recent changes in power.
Whatever speculations were being made about the role of China in the coming of the Communist Party government in Nepal, KP Oli completely rejected it and said that “We are the ones who have made this alliance.”
Addressing the meeting of the House, he said that for economic development and political stability, securing vote of confidence becomes imperative.
Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, Prime Minister of Nepal further said that, I need the support of the Parliament to realize my self respect, nationalism and pride in sovereignty. I assure the House that industrial activities and many startups will be promoted in the country in the future.
He further said that people’s faith in democracy has been restored since the beginning of self-governance. People’s faith in the country has been strengthened due to self-governance and public service.
