President Vladimir Putin cautioned the West about the potential use of nuclear weapons in the context of the Ukraine conflict, stating that Russia could employ all available means to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity if threatened.
In response to accusations of nuclear saber-rattling, Putin emphasized that it was the United States, not Russia, that had previously used nuclear weapons, referencing the bombings of Japan in World War II.
Addressing senior editors of international news agencies in St. Petersburg, Putin clarified that Russia’s nuclear doctrine allows for the use of such weapons in response to various threats.
“For some reason, the West believes that Russia will never use it,” Putin remarked. “Our nuclear doctrine is clear: if actions threaten our sovereignty and territorial integrity, we consider it possible to use all means at our disposal. This should not be taken lightly or superficially.”
