Sep 26 – Dozens of Russian navy personnel, including “senior leadership,” were killed on Friday as Ukraine launched a missile barrage on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters in the Crimean city of Sevastopol, according to CNN.
Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces announced on social media that a special operation nicknamed “Crab Trap” had been planned to take place while senior members of Russia’s Navy were meeting. They stated that the attack killed and injured dozens of people, “including the senior leadership of the fleet.”
However, names have not yet been released, according to CNN.
“The data was transmitted to the Air Force for strike. The details of the attack will be revealed once it is possible. The result is dozens of dead and wounded occupiers, including the senior leadership of the fleet,” the statement read.
The attack was the most dramatic demonstration yet of Ukraine’s confidence in going after Russian installations in seized Crimea, as well as the vulnerability of crucial infrastructure on the peninsula.
Notably, Sevastopol is the largest city in Crimea, which Russia unlawfully annexed in 2014.
