Congress MP Shashi Tharoor recently addressed India’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack during an event at the Indian Consulate in New York. When questioned about his support for the government’s actions, Tharoor clarified, “I don’t work for the government, as you know. I work for an opposition party, but I myself authored an op-ed… saying the time has come to hit hard but hit smart. I’m pleased to say that’s exactly what India did” .
Tharoor emphasized that India’s actions were precise and calibrated, targeting nine specific terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including those of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad . He underscored that the intent was to send a clear message without escalating into a broader conflict.
Highlighting the unity in India’s political landscape, Tharoor noted that the Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives, brought people together across religious and societal lines. He stated, “There was an extraordinary amount of togetherness cutting across religious and other divides that people have tried to provoke” .
Tharoor is leading an all-party delegation as part of Operation Sindoor, a diplomatic outreach initiative to garner international support against terrorism. The delegation’s visit to the 9/11 Memorial in New York was symbolic of global solidarity against terrorism.
