Romeo Nance, a 23-year-old suspect in the shooting deaths of seven people across two residences near Chicago in the state of Illinois, was found dead from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds, according to reports.
US Marshals located Nance near Natalia, Texas, and it was reported that he took his own life with a handgun following a confrontation with Texas law enforcement officials, as per information from the police on Monday night (local time), as reported by ABC News.
The Chief of Police in Joliet, located approximately 50 km from Chicago, revealed in a press conference that seven people were found shot to death in the two residences. Nance was believed to reside close to the crime scenes, and he had a history marked by violence, having been previously arrested for aggravated discharge of a weapon involving a woman, as per CBS News. Court records indicated that he was out on bond for a 2023 shooting case and was still awaiting trial at the time of this incident.
Police emphasized that Nance should be considered armed and dangerous. They provided details that Nance was believed to be driving a red Toyota Camry with license plate Q730412. The authorities also disclosed an ongoing investigation into an earlier series of “random” shootings in the area, resulting in one fatality and one individual critically wounded.
“I’ve been a policeman for 25 years,” stated Evans. “This is probably the worst crime scene I’ve ever been associated with.”
The tragic incident has once again brought the issue of gun control in the United States to the forefront.
