A fresh confrontation between the government and the Opposition unfolded in Parliament on Wednesday after Union Home Minister Amit Shah offered to participate in a detailed discussion and answer the Opposition’s questions, while Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi rejected the proposal, saying the Opposition was seeking answers rather than a lecture.
The exchange came amid continued disruptions in Parliament over the government’s handling of student protests and allegations surrounding the NEET issue. The Opposition has been demanding answers from the government, while the ruling side has accused it of preventing Parliament from functioning normally.
Speaking in Parliament, Amit Shah said the government was ready for a discussion and offered a 24-hour window, from 3 PM on Wednesday to 3 PM the following day. He said he was prepared to remain present and respond to the issues raised by the Opposition. Shah also asked the Opposition to submit its demands through the appropriate parliamentary process so that a discussion could be scheduled.
Shah’s offer was presented as an attempt to break the ongoing deadlock in Parliament. The government maintained that it was prepared to discuss the concerns raised by the Opposition and respond to questions on the student protests and related issues.
However, Rahul Gandhi dismissed the offer within minutes. He said the Opposition was not interested in listening to a “lecture” from the Home Minister and argued that the protesting youth wanted answers to their concerns. Gandhi also demanded accountability from Shah rather than another statement from the government.
The sharp exchange has further highlighted the political divide between the government and the Opposition during the ongoing Parliament session. While the government says it is ready to debate and answer questions, the Opposition maintains that it wants substantive responses to the concerns raised by students and protesters.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has also criticised Rahul Gandhi, arguing that since the Opposition had been demanding a response from Amit Shah, it should now participate in the discussion after the Home Minister offered to answer questions.
The latest face-off comes as Parliament continues to witness disruptions, with both sides blaming each other for the deadlock. Whether Shah’s offer leads to a substantive debate or further political confrontation remains to be seen.
